A Word from our 2005 winner - Lydia Gammie

Lydia Gammie

Music has always been a big part of my life. My Dad has been writing songs ever since I can remember and he has always had me perform with him at various events.

I grew up in Marlborough for 13 years and Dad and I would perform at functions around Marlborough quite regularly. I have always been part of school choirs and travelled to Japan for the 9th International Youth Musicale with Bella Voce, the Marlborough Girls College Choir. With this musical influence, I started writing songs at the age of 12.

Since then I have written close to 40 songs, each one reflecting a part of my life that I was experiencing at the time I wrote it! Growing up in the church also helped, with music being continually around me.

Last year I came 13th in the Play It Strange Secondary School Songwriting Competition, and was a finalist at CTC. This year I won the Hutt Valley High talent quest after coming second equal last year.

Lydia Gammie

'They Think They're In Love' is a song about relationships at my age not being taken seriously, and everyone expecting them to just be 'phases' that we are going through!

Music will continue to be a big part of my life no matter what I decide to do in the future, and I hope that people will always enjoy what I write!
