Welcome to the official information page on the 2006 Play It Strange National Secondary School Songwriting Competition.
This will be the the competition's third year and we look forward to many more brilliant songs coming to light from our young New Zealand songwriters.
FIFTY finalists have been chosen for the 2006 Songwriting Competition.
Of the 339 nationwide entries, judges; Jordan Luck, Yulia, Hamish Jackson and Ladi6 came up with the following categories which for now remain in alphabetical order by song title:
All 50 finalists receive official certificates 1 - 40 also receive recording studio time, a place on the Play It Strange CD and retail credit at the NZ Rockshop stores nationwide.
One of New Zealands most celebrated songwriters and chief judge, Jordan Luck, had this to say, "What I learn from and listen for is the unpredictability. If I can imagine or hear what I think is coming next and then suddenly be surprised, by an outstanding quirk / uniqueness, then I am introduced to a fine euphoric state".
On Thursday 21st September the Top 5 finalists will be announced. These finalists have the opportunity to perform their song at the award ceremony at Western Springs College, on Thursday 5th October when the winner will be announced. Other finalists have the opportunity to perform on a second stage after the main show.
The songs this year show a true "sense of adventure", says CEO, Mike Chunn. "Both lyrically and musically, young people are pushing the boundaries".
Play It Strange is a Charitable Trust established in November 2003 for the purpose of encouraging young New Zealanders to develop interests and skills in songwriting and musical performance. The song competition is their flagship programme and other programmes include the Band Of Strangers, Songnet (for songwriters at school) and Ukulele Orchestras.
