Ukulele Programme
Ukuleles are a great introduction to the music world for young people. They are suitable for little fingers and you can sing while you play - a good tool for songwriting. Play it strange has distributed 2,800 ukuleles to NZ schools over the years as funding has allowed. This year Play It Strange is happy to have Maria Winder as co-ordinator of the Auckland 'Junior Comp' this year, funded by ASB Community Trust Entry form HERE Maria Winder is the director of The Sound of Music Education and a part time music specialist teacher at East Tamaki Primary School in Otara. The Sound of Music Education was established in 2009 to provide professional development in music education for primary teachers and to support music learning opportunities in primary schools. Maria has a particular passion for ukulele playing and singing. She is a founding trustee of The Ukulele Festival Trust and coordinates The NZ Ukulele Festival “Kiwileles” massed schools ukulele orchestra and The Play It Strange “Junior Comp” ukulele songwriting competition.
Over the years Play It Strange has rolled out Ukuleles in NZ primary and intermediate schools. We hope to formalise our provision of ukulele orchestras in the near future. They The NZ Rockshop in association with Play It Strange have come up with an "education only" price on August 2008 In August 2008 15 schools from the waiting list in the Auckland region have received ukulele orchestras. February 2008 In February 2008 a generous donation from David Richwhite allowed 26 more schools, mainly in the Auckland region, to have a ukulele orchestra. 24 Schools will receive 20 ukuleles and a tuner. Two more schools receive 10 ukuleles.
